Sustainability
Made from natural raw materials – sand, soda ash, limestone and dolomite, along with recycled glass, glass is infinitely recyclable, making it the perfect package for wineries. It is the only widely-used packaging material rated GRAS (Generally Recognized As Safe) by the U.S. FDA.
Ardagh Glass Packaging is taking our glass packaging sustainability to the next level with our three-prong approach focused on emissions, ecology, and our people and communities.
Here are some highlights:
- In the Western U.S., glass bottles manufactured by Ardagh in 2023 for the U.S. wine market used approximately 39% recycled content (a combination of post-industrial and post-consumer recycled content).
- Our glass manufacturing facility in Madera, Calif., which produces bottles for the wine market, uses a closed-loop water system and discharges zero wastewater off-site.
- Our glass manufacturing facility in Seattle, which produces bottles for the wine market, operates a state-of-the-art stormwater handling system to protect the Duwamish River.
- In 2024, we were pleased to announce a renewable energy solar project in Madera with CI Renewables.
We were also the first company in the U.S. to offer bottles and jars that combine product aesthetics with a reduced environmental impact, known as ECO Series®. This innovative series provides all the eco-friendly advantages of glass – a neutral and inert material that is infinitely recyclable, while maintaining high quality, enhancing customer appeal and lessening the overall impact on the environment. In production, the ECO Series range meets the same standards of technical and aesthetic quality as traditional containers, while resulting in immediate gains for the customers’ transportation optimization and illustrating a commitment to sustainability. Our expanding collection of ECO Series bottles now offers more options and flexibility than ever before.
